USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a session-based text communication protocol available on every GSM-enabled mobile device. USSD codes are powered by mobile network operators such as Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom.
It is a session-based text communication without a store-and-forward mechanism (unlike SMS).
USSD messages can have up to 160 alphanumeric characters and the time it takes from a request to a response is 2 seconds while it takes 6 seconds for an SMS to reach a mobile phone. The USSD session expires after 180 seconds.
You can get a Safaricom, Airtel, or Telkom USSD code from AirTouch Connections Limited. We offer both shared and dedicated USSD codes for each industry. USSD codes begin with * and end with #. A good example is *254# for the Hustler Fund. Get in touch with us to see the available shared and dedicated USSD codes from Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom.
AirTouch Developers can help you automate your customer service operations with a single USSD code. We configure your assigned USSD code to display a list of menus and submenus that help your customer find important information about your brand, answers to questions they may have or even trigger an action when they key in a specified response.
AirTouch USSD codes are also useful for automating banking and other financial services that accept mobile payments. When a user keys in the specified command, a menu will pop up prompting them to enter their mobile money PIN to complete the transaction.
If you run a bank, you can put all your teller services in a USSD menu. When your clients initiate the USSD command, they will be able to view account details, view balance, make payments and borrow loans.
